I was wondering about the possibilities of ski touring around this new hut in the Tantalus Range. What is the terrain like around there? Would it be worth going in during the winter? The ACC page hints of the avy danger. Is there nowhere to go if things are unstable?

thanks,
Tyler

p.s. it would be nice to get a straight up answer about the terrain. I have taken an avalanche course so I don`t feel like being lectured about avy danger, etc. It just sounds like if the terrain is good it could be a really cool place to go to.

cheers,
Tyler

If you have a membership at bivouac.com (pretty cheap considering the resources available) read Paul Kubick's report from the link below

No avy lectures needed. His report gives a good descriptor of the risks.

When we were there in the spring, there was a group of guys filming a documentary on extreme skiing. They were hucking off cornices and skiing steep couloirs on Serratus. Having said that, there are some nice gentle slopes close to the hut leading down to the north that would be fun, but you could ski all those in a day or two.

It seems to me like it would be a good place to get stuck in a winter storm for many days in a row with no safe skiing options (gentle crevassed glacier + whiteout = unsafe IMHO) and no exit until the weather clears enough for a helicopter to fly you out.

In the spring, it seems like maybe a good place to be if you are into steep skiing.
