My Asolo's came with the cord style laces which are a pain to keep tied. Even tryed the double loop trick which didn't work too well. Just got back from Mark's WorkWear world (for work boots) and found they have "Kevlar" flat laces. They seem to work like a dream but are a bit on the pricey side ... $10.00.

i had round shoe laces on my boots when i first got them and they would always come undone, then i tried some flats, no problems since, i donno if what they are made of makes much different, but i find flat shoe laces stay done up.

| i, too have cord style laces, and the trick for me is the way to tie them: wrap the lace TWICE around the bight instead of just once, and it ties snug as a bug. |

I think the proper word for a boot lace tip (that little bit of plastic wrapped around the end to prevent fraying) is an iglit.

Oops, I think you meant "aglet". I also get rid of those darned round laces in favor of flat. The new oval ones aren't too bad either if not stiff.

ice hockey laces work wonders too. (i have nothing but complaints about my asolo fusion 90 GTX's). hockey laces are waxed and dont loosen at all. just be sure not to over tighten.

hooray, answers to my # 1 shoe problem! No joke. and I can't understand why all the manufacturers insist on giving you laces that are too long and make you walk on them when they're tied. Must have some deal with plastic surgeons for cuts on nose jobs

So now I'm wondering if... I have Kevlar laces and Kevlar on the boots, do I have to worry about those mountain men shooting at my feet ? " Dance Monkey "
Oh and if you DO loose your aglet in the bush a dab of hot wax works just fine. ( hummm sounds painful... waxing ones aglet)

Heck, just put the tip of the agletless lace in your stove flame for a second or so and twirl it with your finger to seal it off. All the laces nowadays are synthetic fibres and can be heat sealed. That's how I get around the manufacturer surplus. I do it at home with a candle after cutting it to the length I want. Thought that was something everyone knew

Well, IF you have round eyelets - and not hook/loops - at the top of your boot, all you do is take the lace from the left side and put it through the right, and vice versa, then tie the lace on the inside. This will NOT come undone. :)

After trying on many boots I notice that each sales person has a different way of lacing boots. Check out the stores and asked them (along the Broadway strip) Round, flat laces, they are okay as long as I double bow knot them. If they are too long then I hook them up to the top and re-hook them down enough so I can tie my bow. Also, as I'm hooking them "up" I hook them away from me and around so that way when I tighten them and lace up to the next hook they stay in place. I know it's hard to picture but I learned all this from knowledgeable sales people.

Aglet it is.
As for the other responses, I agree there is no need for an aglet when exposure to the heat from a flame nicely fuses the end of nylon and other synthetic laces. As for round vs. flat: round laces are an abomination.

On my day-hikers I have round laces and I double tie them. On my real hiking boots I have flat laces and they are great. So I wonder why they make round laces? There must be a reason for them... strength?

Just discovered an old thread on knots with this amazing advice that may solve the round lace problem:
Step #1 : Create a loop with one of the ends. (so far no difference)
Step #2 : Now wrap the other lace around the base of the first loop. (still no difference)
Step #3 : Now wrap the lace again around the base of the first loop. Yes! This is the big secret! Instead of going around just once we go around twice! Muwahahaha! Will wonders never cease?
Step #4 : Continue tying in the normal fashion.

| I have never had a problem with my roeund laces comeing undone, on my boots or on my basketball shoes. 1 tip I do have for tying boots is, once you get to where there are hooks for the laces, do a sergions knot (the first 1/2 of a reef knot, but wrap the lace around a second time, hope that makes sense) so you can have the lower 1/2 of your boot tight, and the upper a little looser, at least, thats how I like to have my boots if I'm not carrying a really heavy load |

Just noticed this thread, as I initially wasn't interested in talking about boot laces. But now that you point it out....
The round laces on my hikers continually come undone, even when double tied. Strength? They've broken in three or four places in the last year, while the flat laces on my real hiking boots have lasted over 10 years. And they stay done up. I just think some things are made with no purpose or reason at all. |

| I think I'b the only person on here who doesnt hate round laces. I find they are easier to untie when your cold and tired, but I rarely have them come undone on me |
