I have been thinking of making a few changes to the forum areas and wanted to get feedback.
1. Remove the "technique" forum and move the posts to their respective suitable locations. It doesn't get alot of posts and most could probably be moved into "trail talk".
2. Create a new forum called "Climber's Ledge". This would be for mountaineering, scrambling, and climbing topics. I've noticed an increase in the amount of interest in climbing and scrambling and think that having its own area would help share info/ideas.
3. Create a new forum called "Lake Baggers". Peak bagging is common, but we also have our share of lakes. My thought would be to create a forum area. People could post info about a lake (i.e. name, where it is, etc), some interesting info, and some pics. I would create a sticky topic at the top that would keep a big catalog of them. Over time, I could pull these into a mountain Lake wiki, but the forum might be a great place to start.
Let me know your thoughts...

| As a valley crawler and lake searcher I agree with the designation of "Lake Baggers". Not everyone finds peace and joy when they get to the top of the mountain just to look at more tops than they will ever get to. |

I think those are great ideas Jim!
There are definitely more climbers on this site and many people getting into scrambling that it warrants it's own forum.
I also like the idea of the Lake Baggers forum too . Don't think I need to expand on that too much |

These are some great ideas! A climbing/scrambling specific forum as well as a Lake Bagging forum will be great.

| Scrambling portion is perfect. May even want to keep scrambling and climbing separate, but its a great idea for sure |

Excellent ideas, Jim Lake bagging, by the way, is highly underrated Would be a great idea to link BG's fine Wilderness Lakea and Tarns photo essay to that forum too... http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11680 |

All great ideas... would all the climbing/scrambling stuff be in one "Climbers Ledge" thread, or would there be one per province (BC and AB)? Been looking at Sask...lots of lakes there
How about threaded replies to topics? Or was that tried before?

Agreed. Given that "Trail Talk" is a misc hiking related, maybe consider renaming it to sit better alongside the climbing forum. (ie/ activity based forums). "Trail Talk" as a name is a bit generic.

Not a bad idea. Instead of the "technique" forum you could ultimately have some activity-specific forums. Bear in mind that too many forums will make things more difficult - I could see a grouping of region specific forums and a grouping of activity specific forums, with some extra "fluff" stuff (lodge, etc).

Hmmm don't like this idea, sorry. CT doesn't have a "summit" forum, so a lake one wouldn't make sense either. I'd rather see larger, more active forums and a sense of community rather than cutting them up too small. Probably would work best in the regional discussions as they are now - once a wiki is in place we can do some sort of hotlinked lake-specific discussions and other cool things - sort of dynamically pull it together rather than having a specific forum. Things could get too confusing - Do I post in the bushwacking forum, the lake forum, or the mainland forum? etc.
I could see it like this:
Regional Discussions (Remove word "Hiking") (current list)
Activity Related Discussions (or a better word than "Activity") Climbing and Scrambling Hiking (renamed "Trail Talk") Winter-Related Biking/Paddling/Equine Forum Photography
Community Sign Up Board Trip Reports Buy & Sell Track Your Stats
You get the idea... you could also create a "road status" forum to go along with the park closures one.

Just a thought but to make room for the new topics, how about scrapping the Stats one? While it is used by a few people a lot, the traffic probably doesn't warrent it. Since the stats are basically a personal thing, people can always continue to keep track on their own.
The advisories and bulletins could be combined into one topic.

Are you concerned about having too much 'stuff' on the forum? If not, it seems something like stats doesn't hurt. I never even look at that one - I'm not interested. I keep any records I want for myself, and don't care about anyone else's. But if some people really use it, it's not taking away from my CT.
If trip reports keep going into the TR section, except for some smaller things that are put regional (as the Alberta group keeps that thread), it shouldn't be an issue as to where to post. I think something like the scrambling and/or lake-specific would be useful for people who want to discuss them. It can hardly hurt to try it - if specifics become a problem, with too many small forums, each with little activity, a new format can be tried - just as is being suggested now. |
