I know this is not really related but I am heading up to Cape Scott for the first time and was wondering if there was anything other than the usual garb that I should bring? Also, what are people's favourite routes for doing the hike? I was thinking three nights of camping. Thanks for the help.

Regarding "the stump" (cool name by the way)

My favourite has always been to base camp @ Nels Bight & day trip from there. It is the best beach & centrally located between the lighthouse, Hansen's Lagoon & Nissen Bight. There really is only the one route in & that is following the BC parks trail. The other alternative is a water taxi from Port Hardy. 3 nights is a great amount of time to spend up there - I'm jealous already. About the only special gear to consider bringing is an extra tarp or two & rope - when it rains up there it can easily dump 100ml of rain on you in a day without it being unusual. The ranger hut has a collection of tarps that people have left behind (or at least they did last summer) & they don't mind you borrowing one. Take a little bit of cash with you to the lighthouse as they may still be selling icecream & pop. The ranger advised me that the mussels were OK to eat & the eastern end of the beach as there wasn't a red tide concern at the time & they made a great addition to the pasta - some wasabe or soy sauce would have been nice but please check on the red tide status yourself & only do eat them if you feel it is safe

Enjoy
Lee

Thx for the info - I am hoping it is going to stay dry for next week - keeping my fingers crossed.
