Exy and I made a last minute decision to head up for a Poland Lake overnighter, after all Manning Park always has the better weather right? Well thunderstorms were darting in and out the whole way in, so the weather was warm and sunny one minute, then stormy and raining the next, but such weather did provide some interesting photo ops.
Paintbrush at the strawberry flats Trailhead
Pesky WhiskeyJacks! Perhaps that should read "Objects on mirror..."? Setting off from the trailhead
It took us around 90 minutes at a leisurely pace to get to the top of the ridge. The snow was pretty much gone up to this point, but one we got past the ski area, there were frequent patches of snow along the road to Poland Lake
Avalanche lilies are now out. Clouds clearing around LoneGoat. Krista found a nice little pond along the way Poland Lake was still mostly iced over, and most of the surrounding area was still covered in snow as well. Fortunately at the far end of the lake where the campsites are, there was an area that was relatively dry and snowfree where we could set up camp. There were quite a few of these budding around camp. Poland lake from camp in the evening.
The next morning, the clouds were still around, but at least it wasn't raining. The clouds in the trees looked kinda cool: On the way back, we decided to take one of the ski runs back down and then walk out along the road. We found 4 broken poles on the way in as we passed through the ski area. On the way back, we found two more busted poles, as well as an intact rental ski:
On our way home, we stopped off at Rhododendron Flats for some more photo shoots

Sounds like interesting weather. Funny about all the busted poles. Is that run really that tough on gear, or is there just a lot of frustration happening there? I enjoyed your pics and TR. Gotta make it to that lake one day soon!

Nice shots. I like that night shot of the lake. Would have thought there might still be more snow up there.

Nice pics. This one's my favourite (looks like an Ansel Adams, except in colour):

It's always interesting what you find on ski runs just after the snow melts, especially right under the lifts.

NIce TR, Tim. How long did it take to get to the lake? I'm wondering if this would be suitable overnight destination for the family.

Moses:
This is a nice, kid friendly hike. Here is a trip report from last fall when I did the hike with my son (who you met along with half-pint on the Joffre trail last year):
poland report
I don't recall exactly how long it took but it couldn't have been more than 3 hours going in and less coming out.

Moe Chuck is right on the money. This would make a terrific spot to take your family this summer.
The snow should be gone in a few more weeks.
It was interesting Jimbo, most of the gear we found had "property of Manning Park Resort" engravings or sticker attached. I guess it's true what they say about how people treat rentals
I wonder what might have happened to make a person leave a ski behind? And what did he say when returning it's mate to the rental counter.
No ziplocks to be found Dru. The snafflehounds must have made off with them. |

I was also at Poland this weekend. I heard you and your dog on Saturday morning, unfortunatly i was too tired to get up and say hi. Too bad you left before i woke up. Saturday night was amazing, full moon clear night on a snowy landscape. Your picture taking abilities put mine to shame.:) |

LOL sorry about that again. Kris saw your Lab and wanted to play. You guys must have rolled in very late on Friday I was surprised to see anyone else there in the morning!
We had to be back home late afternoon Saturday so we were outta there pretty early.
Too bad we didn't get a chance to meet you. I did catch your "Good Morning" Though :)
Nice shot. I hope the weather improved you you two?

| I love the stuff that shows up once the snow has melted. Yesterday at Mount Hood here in Oregon, I was poking around one of the snow park recreation areas and found all sorts of junk, including a child's snow boot, lots and lots of broken pieces from plastic sleds, gloves galore, and all sorts of other random crap. |

| Wasn't quite iced off enough Sir Nut. Wouldn't have been worth battling the incomming rain/sleet showers for it. |

There was a thawed out strip along the east shore about 20 feet wide. There were many fish jumping there mid-day so i assume the fishing would have been good. I left my rod in the car after i found out you need to buy a park fishing permit in Hope as they are not available at Manning. |

I wasn't aware you needed any more than just a regular BC fishing licence...
That's interesting, I wouldn't have thought they'd be too active yet. Ah well there is always next weekend. |

For fishing in a provincial park such as Manning, you only need your regular BC fishing licence.
Special licences are only required when fishing in National Parks, such as Banff, or on special "Restricted waters" as identified in the freshwater regulations.
