Bear spry
Some type of self-defense tools!

Are these practical, have you found above items work for you?

Maybe Jim could move this over to the gear forum. It is not about the CT site.

These gadgets are tools and require some learning. If you are asking which to buy, I would recommend you learn all about GPS receivers, and probably about maps and software that you would like to use with your receiver. Part of this process of discovery is learning what you'd like to do with a GPS. Eventually you will know which device is right for you.

If you just want to play around with the gadget and discover what it can and cannot do, buy a good one that does not cost too much. This is one of the best deals currently available (as I post it is under $100), an eXplorist 200, but when looking for sales, the situation changes daily. That was about 20 bucks cheaper a couple of weeks ago.

Bear spry

Most people I know don't carry bear spray... but how to behave around bears is not a small subject and there are lots of opinions about this. You can buy it at MEC. If you decide to buy it, please learn how to use it. Also learn how to travel in bear country so you won't need to use it.

The best defense is knowing where you are going and what you might encounter. Be prepared and act accordingly. I don't know what you mean by 'self defense.' I doubt you need self-defence tools.
