So.

Ever have one of those moments where your entire life changed?

I just had one.

I just discovered that I have been tying my shoelaces wrong for the past 30ish years.

I found this out by visiting http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/knots.htm.

The watershed moment came when I realized that tying a shoelace is just tying a reef knot. I looked at what was happening, and everything I did was wrong. Well, not everything. I just go over, and I should go under.

However, I really like his Ian's knot method, and if I am going to have to re-learn how to tie my shoes (and, by extension, learn a new way of tying a reef knot), I think I'll just practice the Ian knot.

My wife thinks it's because I'm left handed; I think it's the teacher taught me backwards, and I kept doing it for...well, until today.

But from here on in, I resolve to change. To do better. And to tie my shoelaces with a proper reef.

I never get lost. It's just that sometimes, I'm not sure where I am.

I didn't think anyone used a reef knot for shoelaces
You should use a surgeon's knot and then a big bow and then tie the ends of the bow, in another surgeon's knot!

It is because you're left handed! Fight the power, man!

The point is that a bow, done properly, _is_ a reef knot. Tie a bow. Now put your fingers through the loops of the bow and pull until the ends come through. If the resulting knot is a reef knot, then you've tied a good bow, if it's a granny, well adding surgeon's knots can help, but the truth is, you can't even tie your own shoe laces!

Hmmm, I see what you mean, but if you tie off the ends of the bow with the surgeon's knot it doesn't matter which way you tie it. You could use a reef knot, granny knot, what knot or thief knot.

I think to describe what you are doing as wrong is a little harsh. But these are interesting knots.

I learned some useful ideas about how to lace my mountain boots from the Montrail site. Unfortunately that info is now gone. But I'm happy to try some of these knots. Thanks.

The question is... Are your shoelaces always undone? If not, well you're doing just fine! Why make this sound more complicated than it is? Shoes are shoes, non?

Yeah but the little flaps on my Kobe's prevent the laces from ever untying
