We all at some point have seen fascinating visual phenomena resulting from the refraction, reflection, diffraction and scattering of light passing through water droplets and ice crystals in the atmosphere. Inspired by a colourful common rainbow we have tried to capture these rarer displays with our cameras. I thought it would be fun to start a thread showcasing some of this unique stuff and see what turns up. Here are some examples to start us off:
 Rainbows with secondary bows
Parhelia or "sun dog"
 Belt of Venus
Aurora borealis: curtains
Iridescence in altocumulus clouds
and my favourite: A Brocken Specter or "glory"
... all moonbeams and bows, rays, glories, coronas, sun pillars etc. that you manage to capture in your outdoor pursuits, please post them here |

Here's a double rainbow that I took a picture of last October while paddling around South Pender Island:

This one is not really a phenomenon, but I really liked the way dramatic effect that the light had on this small islet:

I'll add the effects of Simon's beergoggles here, as it is an interesting illusion: |

Nice pictures Steve! I love the double rainbow framing the mountains.
I don't have any pictures of double bows, but the most beautiful, intense ones we've seen have been in Hawai'i.

I never knew that was called the Belt of Venus - great name - have lots of pictures of this - it has always been my favorite sight, I just love the blues & pinks.
Auroras

Iridescence

Another cool one is the shadow of a mountain extending above the horizon.

Halo

Here is a halo around the sun that we observed in June '05 while camping at Salmon Lake.

BTW, the saying goes: Ring around the moon (or sun, in this case) means rain or snow soon...
Sure enough, it was pouring within a day!

Some nice photos everybody! David and Karen, that shadow of Shasta pic is really cool with the tip growing up out of the horizon... TheShadow, cdanes, WCP: love that sun halo and double rainbow pics - very colourful. Always cool to see the Tantalus Range bheaps even if they are not atmospheric phenomena.
Here's a picture taken yesterday afternoon. These are called Crepuscular rays or "God rays" I know there are better ones on CT dig em up please |

I was under the impression they were called "Buddha's Rays"...I guess it all depends on your denomination.
Dru, what area is this? It looks vaguely familiar.

Those are some unearthly streamers Dru! Reversing my view, it looks as if the sun is drawing water from the river. I think storm days in the mountains are much more visually dramatic and the lighting more "supernatural" than on clear days. Nicely captured |

| Anyone have any sun pillar photos? There have been some great ones on spaceweather.com lately. I think it's usually too warm in Vancouver to see them here, though. |

| Post us an example Dru... I'm curious. I was thinking of doing a black and white, that left some colourful object saturated in isolation. Someone mentioned this to me this morning and heck... this should not only be easy for photoshopers but.. maybe kind of neat looking too. |
