good idea, that would be especially useful when someone is looking to buy a piece of gear, and have narrowed it down to a few options

The map idea sounds great!

What would be the feasibilty of compiling a collection of topographic maps, like the Geographic Survey maps, for popular hiking areas? They could be used for trail/logging road acsessibility and condition. Perhaps updated by the membership as personal experience dictates. It'd be a tough job to compose, I would think.

It might take the fun out of things for some folks. Copyright infringment?

Just a thought...

Frivolous, I know, but avatars might be a nice touch. You don't have to have one if you don't want to but could if you did. I'd also like to see the smilies enabled in Thread titles. I support the photo gallery and batch uploads, too. I'm not sure I like the idea of being able to self-rate your abilities. That could easily be misused or abused, both intentionally and unintentionally. People see where you go, how you act etc from the reports and get a feeling for that kind of thing. If I said I was an expert hiker and simonc said he was an expert hiker what would that mean!? See what I mean? Too confusing and "competitive".

I've always lobbied for a better trails database. We have all the info already and more pics than any other site, it's just a matter of finding a way of linking it all together. You could have it as a sort of question/search where you get a question like" Where do you want to hike/climb/bushwack today? and there would be a box to fill in. I fill in Lynn Peak and up comes the trail description and links to all the TRs about LP. And maybe a basemap with the route marked and the GPS track available for download. I know Bas was already using some kind of link to generate basemap for the trail database he started to compile. And maybe a related trails link so you would get the main trail but the related link could give you the Hydraulic creek approach.

That's what comes to mind first for me

How about a photo contest? There are lots of fantastic photographers here, and I'm sure we could get a panel of volunteer judges going. Hell, I'd volunteer

Great feedback everyone! I appreciate your time and thoughts you've been suggesting that will make CT even more helpful. The integration of features is something high on my list.

We used to do photo contests a while back - was called photo of the month. Might have to bring something of that back, but with more automated controls. Before it was done by emailing me and I tried to tabulate results, but it wasn't as nice as it could have been. Also, the current 'photo essays' is along the same idea as there is a theme involved. I quite enjoy looking through those....

I'd like to see full-size picture feature and vote feature which can be used to see something like how many ppl here prefer full-size picture feature

i think there isn't much problem with bandwidth if the size of pic is limited to a smaller scale.

I think we should have a "membership fee"...

All the hard work that the Jims do, not to mention the hardware and software, are worthy of recompense...

No full sized pictures, please. This way I can choose the ones I want to see in full size...

And paid membership... It's time to walk the talk....

I think all the time they put in is worthy of recompense, too, CJack but to have it be a paid membership would diminish it somehow. Not everyone can afford to pay or would want to and that would make it more selective, which some might think is a good idea but I think not. What we could do is to have a place to check if you'd like to make a donation to help cover some of the costs and time and effort of the Jims. Or, you could have special privileges for paid members where they get to use special features that are not available to nonpaying members. I don't know what they could be but there might be someway to encourage that. Maybe paid members don't have to see the Google ads or whatever. I for one, hate seeing that Hiking Singles advert everytime I get to the bottom of a forum. Be worth it to me to pay a few bucks to not have to see it.

I also think there should be permanent sidebar that advertises the CT patches (I want a couple new ones) and maybe we could have some other CT products like hiking mugs and such. I'll bet members would support that.

Unless I didn't hear this right, LongShadow was telling me about these new women underwear they were thinking of making. I am not volunteering to do the modelling but would probably buy a pair for fun if they're nice and fit well. And if there's some funky drawing on it too of course...

As for the membership, I can't afford to pay much at the moment but wouldn't mind paying if the cost is reasonable. Could be a good way to tell if someone is serious or not about the outdoors... Or maybe those who pay can have access to more info? I wouldn't pay to get rid of those Google Ads but would definitely pay to have access to this map stuff you were talking about. And if you have a few more add ons to this it would be even better. I am not sure how much of your own money you're spending on this but maybe that could help you out a bit? People often don't realise the time and effort that kind of stuff demands. We take things for granted way too often I think. And if this doesn't work for the rest of the group, then maybe the donation button could be a good idea then.

And now here's my special feature request. I might sound a bit anal but it would be good to have a tab feature for when we write things up on a post. Not a bullet feature, just a simple tab feature. Sometimes when I make lists, I like to align things properly so it looks nice and clean. Maybe it's there and I've never seen it? If so then please tell me where to find it. If not then I would be really happy to have one. And if it's too complicated or you find this useless well I'm cool with that too. After all, I managed to live without it until now so it wouldn't be the end of the world if there wasn't one in the end.

Thanks for taking the time to read this...

I don't think a member-pay system would work, most people would be driven away by it. But it certainly wouldn't hurt CT to have a little Paypal linky for those that want to donate.

Snowseeker, there's a 'list' feature on the toolbar when you go to reply to a post..... it's right next to the smiley feature. Have you seen it? Might be what you are looking for.

No, that's not what I'm looking for... That one's got bullets.
  • I want
  • something
  • different than that!
But thanks for trying anyway...

I would leave if we had to pay, although a CT store sounds like a great idea, I would definatly buy stuff from it, or maybe just put a donate link up at the top where it says home parks message board etc

Speaking of smileys, we definitely need a 'rolling eyes' smiley

Who wanted rolleye smilies?

Okay, back to the business of this thread...

There have been a few references to trails and some comments about Bas' site...
http://trail.brijn.nu/

My understanding is that that site began with contact with CT members, and it serves pretty much the same group.

Bas has done an amazing job of extracting data from the BC Provincial online maps, and creating the software to allow the online user to create and print very accurate topo maps, satellite maps and even (where there is coverage) aerial photo maps, all complete with the local UTM grid. Using GPX, the user can add a GPS track or route from software or from a GPS receiver, and overlay this information on the maps.

I think there is a real need to have good maps associated with trip reports and trails or route information.

For whatever reason, Bas has not attracted large numbers of the CT community to his site. Is there a way that CT could invite Bas to bring his techniques into this user-friendly site?

I am often surprised at the folks who have wonderful GPS equipment, but don't really know how to use all of the features... and share the information.

You must be a mind-reader.. I was planning to have a thing on the side with patches to buy. I've been thinking of other CT gear as well. Still working out the ideas and sourcing the products as we speak. I'll likely put the patch sale thing up within the week.

I don't plan to make it a pay site. However, I might have a membership thing where you get some extra perks and stuff. i.e. less ads, get a patch, few additional forum features, etc. I'm still sorting out the details.
