Anyone have any news about the trail status of the proposed Cape Scott to Shushartie Bay trail. BC parks have been planning it for some time and last I heard it was scheduled for opening last summer. It is supposed to branch off from the junction of the Nels/Nissen Bight Trail intersections and go along the coast and inland from the coast for some stretches until it reached Shushartie Bay. The Danish settlers had carved a rough trail years ago which has been completely overgrown.

I was up at Nissen Bight on the July 1st long weekend and there were signs on a trail leaving the far end of the beach warning that the North Coast trail was still under construction. There was also a bunch of tarp shelters set up with what looked like trail building supplies and supplies for a work team. I can't remember exactly what the signs said, but I remember getting the impression that the trail would open the following season, which would be this summer. I imagine it would be difficult to build a trail in that area given the remoteness of the area and the general soggy-ness.

I was also at Cape Scott over the Canada Day Long Weekend last year (and the year before) We hiked the last 4 km with the trail builders staying at Nissen Bight. They were coming to have dinner with the Ranger. They were not too informative. Just had their minds on dinner and were very fast with nothing on their backs. On the first we talked to a woman who is in charge of all the BCParks north of Campbell River. She was just up checking on her Ranger/Facilitator. She said the trail will be open this spring, 2006. I don't remember her name. I have checked the Northern Island Trail Society Site and they also indicate that it will be opening this spring but they have not updated the status since last January. I plan to phone the northern-most BCParks Office and see what I can find out. I will post again if I find more info. Anyone else, please do the same. I am excited to hike the trail. When I have done Cape Scott I have brought my dog for company. I worry that there would be many more animals on a new trail and would worry about her reaction if we ran into a bear or cougar. Any comments?

In spite of many good childhood memories from hiking extensively on the Olympic Coast in Washington, my hiking preferences are heavily biased towards alpine destinations. Quite frankly, the West Coast Trail languishes a longway down my "to do" list ... like maybe never. In spite of that, this looks like an amazing hike. My one trip to Cape Scott in the mid-70s stays with me as an exceptional event in my life. The idea of stepping out from there for an extended hike along remote north Island shores is truly enticing.

It is definitely great news if they manage to complete the trail according to the timeline. The Cape Scott/Shushartie country definitely has an aura of remoteness and history that I find very appealing. For those of us with a, ummm, slight affinity for big trees, the prospect of prowling around the estuaries of the Nahwitti and Shushartie Rivers is an added bonus.

I'd be very interested if someone put something together to tackle that part of the island again.

I like the way you guys are talking. Keep it going. I have booked off June 28th - July 4th inclusive for just such a trip. Maybe North Coast, maybe Cape Scott (again) or maybe Nootka Island. I would love to participate in a group thing. It is hard to convince my friends that it is a good idea to strap 45 lbs on your back and hike for 6-8 hours a day. They don't know what they are missing.

Just got an email back from the Society (I was hoping to have this one opening by Easter so I could justify a trip). They are somewhat short on funds and the trail date has been pushed back to the fall.

TMC-

Thanks for the info on the potential for the trail not opening until the autumn of this year. I have written to the Society to get confirmation since I was planning a trip to do this trail at the end of July.
If anyone else has info on the trail not being open until then please leave a message here. Thanks.

Here is the response i got back from the Society that is helping to fund the Trail:

Yes it is confirmed the Cape Scott North Coast Trail will not be opened until we can raise further funding, at least $200,000 to $300,000. No portion of the trail will be opened as BC Parks wishes to keep it closed while under construction.

Cathy Witton cmw@island.net
Secretary
Northern Vancouver Island Trails Society

So it appears that the closure is indefinite until the funds are raised to complete it.

That is a disappointment. I'll have to move on to other plans. Worse things could happen.

I'll scratch the North Coast Trail off my list. Still Cape Scott is quite inviting.
