Geez, Ted, you're such a skeptic
Knowing Grouse as I do I thought maybe they'd tell you skiing was free, but you have to pay a reduced fare of 20 bucks for the ride up on the tram

A few years ago Grouse was seriously considering doing away with lift-serviced skiing entirely. The thinking was that the overhead for liftees, snow making, grooming and lift and run maintenance didn't justify the incremental revenue it generated. They were doing very well with just the tourists coming up for the view, dinners in the restaurant, sleigh rides, ice skaters etc.

But then they tried something outside the envelope: they introduced the absurdly low priced Y2Play pass in 2000. It was an unrestricted season pass for $250 for an adult $50 for a kid and free for a "tot" (6 and under). They made a killing: not on the pass revenue but on the revenue generated in the lodge selling food and drinks to the passholders and all of the friends and family members that they brought along.

The program of almost free skiing has been so successful that they have made Y2Play passes a standard, annual offering and have invested substantially in upgrading the ski facilities including the new high-speed quad "Olymipic" chair. More upgrades are planned.

So think of the one day of free skiing as a lost leader: they're using it to draw people into the "store" with the fully justified expectation that they will spend more on other purchases once they arrive.

baminem:

$700 is not a Y2Play pass: that is the full price season pass. In other words, you waited way too long. Y2Play passes are sold at the end of the preceding season and cost less than half a regular pass (my full season, 2005-2006 unrestricted pass was $250; my teenage daughter's was $150 and my 11 year old son's was $50).

As for Blackcomb, where, when and how do you get a season pass for $350? I want one! The website quotes $1329 for an unrestricted pass and $859 for a mid-week pass.

i know i missed the y2play so i went to grouse and asked for a student discount and they wouldnt give me anything I've even had passes there for the last 6 years, still no deal. College and University student can get blackcomb passes for 350 when bought with 3 other people.

Are there any CT backcountry skiers who have Y2Play passes (or other Grouse passes) this season?

I'm headed back to Grouse this season, and I'm always on the lookout for other tele skiers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there's an age cut-off... something like having to be 25 and under in addition to being a current university student.

Thanks threeprime. I guess I wasn't clear - I do have a Y2Play pass and I'm wondering if I should be on the lookout for other CT telemarkers who ski at Grouse.

Cheers, P.
