What an awesome trip.
We left friday morning, and started at the trail-head, Cascade parking lot at noon. We decided to take the Dewdney trail (horse trail) to the first camp, and then the Whatcom trail back (hiking trail). Well, the Dewdney trail was a little overgrown with shrubs, nettle, and blackberry bushes at several spots. But with long sleeve shirts and long pants, it was fine. The hike was steady, and other than the overgrowth, the trail was good. Very beautiful hike, especially when entering into Paradise Valley. The sub-alpine meadows, covered in a rainbow of flowers was just spectacular. Since there is no water at the Snass View Campsite, we filled up at the creek just a couple km's before. Took us a little over 5 hours to get to camp. The Snass view Campsite was very pretty. Many great - flat - campspots on a grassy plain. The bugs got quite bad 'round dusk, so we stayed in the tent, falling asleep to the sounds of deer frolicking nearby. We kept the fly off, to watch the sky full of stars, free of all orange city lights. Next morning, after breakfast we headed up the Whatcom trail. This was uphill 'till getting over the ridge of Punch Bowl Lake. The lake and surrounding meadows were JUST breath-taking - we stopped many times, just to admire the views. The hike back down was STEEP and quite slippery in areas, with loose gravel/rock. Since we were in the sun all the way back, it was HOT. Nice hike though (and we were glad we decided to take the loop in this direction). Took us longer to get back -- a little over 6 hours.
Well, all in all just a great area. We had an excellent time. Sorry no picts, left my camera at home. I'll remember to bring it next time. ;)

Interesting you took the Dewdney trail in (sorry I couldn't join you btw, but thankyou for the invite )
What's your opinion in comparison to the Whatcom trail? Is it what I would figure to be a long gradual slog? The Whatcom trail is steep, but once you get past that first - eerrr how dya describe that part - death grunt! Its quite delightful with the views it has to offer. I think timing for this trip is what makes it more enjoyable. When I went there were a few snow patches left so we had a 'fridge' for some cold bevvies, and some good food. I found it to be very hot hiking in, and a recent trip report from Mr and Mrs Goat said they found it hot also, along with overgrown nasty stinging nettles along the Dewdney trail. I also think a couple days in this area would be nice to spend. There appears to be lots to do beyond Snassview. Glad you enjoyed this trip, photos next time please |
