Aah! I just went out to run the dogs, and thought I'd bike up to Happy Crag, here in Pemby. I wanted to check out what's happening, because I know there is a houselot above the crag, and a few days ago noticed an excavator.

And ALL the anchor bolts are chopped

The sport bolts are still there.

What can I do? It's not a magnificent crag, but it's where I go with my friends once a week. I recall hearing about a dispute over Burgers 'n Fries in Squamish, how was that one resolved?

Does anyone have a suggestion of who I can phone or email to see if I can save this crag? What can I do?

Thanks Spidergirl, I cc'd my email over.

Kman, it's mostly bolted slab climbing. At the top where the bolts were is not gear friendly.

As for who owns it I will have to find out. There is a lot above the crag, that has an excavator working. I assume shortly a house will be there. About a year, probably, given that the excavator is building the retaining walls. When you buy a house, do you own the cliff it sits on? Depends where the property line is I guess. On one hand, chopping the bolts could be a safety issue for the moment, given the excavator and large rocks working above.

I'm ashamed to say that the one time I went looking for Happy Crag I couldn't even find it Hopefully the happiness is restored along with the anchor bolts.

Hopefully indeed. After the long weekend I'll get on the horn to see if I can find out who owns the property.

Well, just so y'all know I'm not just sitting on my butt over here, we (my team of crack investigators, and I) have found out who owns the crag, it's indeed private land, owned by a numbered company: 580049 BC Ltd. The land in question is commonly known as the 'Sabre' property.

Sabre, as far as I know, is a company that owns a bunch of gravel pits and rents out construction equipment etc.

Anybody else know anything about Sabre? Ever heard of them before? I just ask because I've only seen their company here in Pemby and Whis, but as far as I know they may be a large company stretching across BC or Canada.

The base of the crag is a real mess - large rocks, gravel and dirt have been scattered all over the place. Also, some of the wall that held the anchors is simply gone. I've been there a few times over recent weeks, observing the destruction, and most recently late last week - multiple fractures in the rock above (looks like they are making an additional houselot right there, and are blowing up the rock to make it flat)

So this may be the end of Happy Crag..... but not yet.

Thanks guys. I suspected they were fairly small and local. You never know with these companies, sometimes they look small, but stretch across Canada. Knowing they are small is a relief though, I think that will make them easier to talk with.

Will keep this post updated as more information is discovered.

It's private property, leave them alone. I personally would not let people climb on my property with legal issues and all. Especially with the garbage. The world is not our playground. If you want a private one, BUY IT!!!!
