My "Plants of Coastal BC" book says the range of chocolate lilies only goes as far north as mid-Vancouver Island, and yet my boyfriend was on a hike near Prince Rupert during which these flowers were identified as chocolate lilies.
Here are the pics:

Can anyone verify/refute that they are chocolate lilies? |

As you can see from the two photos - the ones from Rupert are Fritillaria Camschatcensis (aka chocolate lily, indian rice, black lily etc) and the bottom ones are Fritillaria Lanceolata (aka chocolate lily, rice root, checker lily etc).
The camschatcensis variety can be found from Alaska to Washington state and northern river valleys.

| I guess the amount of speckling varies greatly? The photos I have show very little of it. |

different species, different phenotypes. Thanks, telkwa for the info. Fritillaria lanceolata is what we saw on Elk. way cool. I love naming things ANd just FYI, genus is capitalized, species is not and names are italicized, hehehehe |
