In this same forum on a locked thread, it was announced that Moose (I assume that it's Anon E. Moose) has been banned although the reason was not given. There was a mention of creating a duplicate user but that has been done by a number of users on this board and has never been a justification for banning before.

Aside from illegal or immoral acts, I have difficulty with the idea of banning.

Is this item open to discussion or is that also banned? If so, please ban me as well.

Thank you

Correct me if I'm wrong LongShadow, but I think the banning has more to do with not only the multiple accounts(which are really annoying and should be delt with), but that Moose and a few other people have been problematic in the last couple of weeks and constant warnings havnt done much...

Unless the problem stops, running CT is probably more work then fun for LS...

dcongrav, I'm sure you can freely discuss this, but the point is that bannings are needed in a few cases to keep the CT comunity intact... this isn't a place for war, its a free exchange of information.

Is it possible for someone to have enough technical knowledge to make it look like someone other than themselves was setting up an extra id? If that's possible, and you were the "victim", how could you prove it wasn't you?

If this is possible, or even easy, maybe the banning has to await abuse of the new id.

Someone on paddling.net got banned, immediately created a new id, and carried on as a valued, if controversial, but not serially banned, contributor.

I gotta say something here.
I have browsed and participated in a number of discussion boards and forums, and this one is by far the most "responsible" in terms of self-policing. There isn't a lot of gratuitous spamming, very little profanity or vulgarity and by-and-large the members seem to be a mature bunch.
There may be some irrelevant silliness from time to thyme, but most often, the threads are kept on-topic and "most" of the disagreements I have seen have been solved by way of a live and let live approach, instead of requiring heavy-handed moderators as is often the case on other forums.

Having said that, whenever the human element is factored in, there is bound to be the odd troublemaker; it's in our nature! If LS needs to step up to the plate and ban a member for violating the Forum Guidelines, so be it.
Chances are, that person will re-appear in a week or two with a new name and (hopefully) a new attitude. If not, then the cycle begins again.

So, where was I going with this? I'm not sure.
This is a good forum, I like it.
The day it turns into just-another-MSN-Channel is the day I leave. I want to thank Jim for keeping it interesting!

D'congrav, instead of having a tantrum, trying to make this a big issue, and creating a fuss, why don't you email LS yourself and hear what he has to say.

That would be the adult approach...

Guidelines

Creating multiple accounts, while not expressly forbidden in this case, is just bad form.

As mentioned previously, there are a number of CT users with multiple accounts including some for their dogs. They have not been banned (nor should they be). Are the "guidelines" applied to some but not to others?

Tell me, why is it when drama arises, I can count on you to appear. Not around for several weeks, and the just like magic you show up when controversy arises. Frankly I wonder how it took so long, was your Internet connection down? And best yet, I can always find that topics will be reopened in some fashion even though I thought it obvious that I am not looking for any further discussion. If I was, I would not have locked the thread in the first place. I wasn't looking for more drama with "way to go" or "you suck" messages... or worse "thank goodness you booted him messages". I don't need to see that kind of thing. So I ask again, why when you see a locked thread, do you choose to reopen it. This isn`t the first time... Do you just not understand what locked threads mean?

Tough. This is my decision.

See previous comment. I don't really think there is anything to discuss. I have continued warnings which are simply disregarded. It shows a complete disrespect for my moderation.

And to those who think I am bashing dcongrav with my response, think again. Every time there is some cause or opportunity to attack the moderation of the site, he'll be there. I am growing weary of this and will grant his wish if it persists.

I don't really want to get into the reasons on the board why I banned Moose. I figure most can put two and two together, but besides that it is not really fair as he doesn't have an opportunity to respond publicly. The only reason I even announced it is because a new acct was created and the problem flared up. If you feel you need an explanation, I can discuss privately.

I knew doing this wouldn't be a popular decision with everyone, but it was something I feel needed to be done to preserve the community.

good lord dcongrav. Are you really this bored? This is perhaps one of the lamest drama threads of all time. We are all here not because we have a right to be but because LongShadow allows us to be here and puts in a ton of unpaid work to provide this community. Get over yourself. If he wants to ban someone he doesn't even need a reason. It's HIS site. Personally, I wish he'd ban all the drama queens.

Regardless of MY opinions regarding multiple accounts, there isn't anything in the guidelines that addresses this specifically (at least nothing that I could see).
If my wife decides to create an account here, does this qualify as a "multiple" since we share the same PC?

A question to ask might be: How are the existing multiple accounts being used?
This might explain the variances enjoyed by some; but again, this is at the discretion of the host/owner.
If I didn't like the way things were run around here I'd leave, it's that simple. Something for the disenchanted to consider.

It is possible to browse the forums without being a member.

Moose was not removed because of multiple accts, if people are panicking about having two accts on a computer (say 2 friends, husband and wife, etc.) then do not worry. I do ask that people refrain from creating multiple accts for the same person where possible. And if you forget your pw, there is a forgot my password function on the site.

On another board that I read, they have a very strict rule of "No talking about the message boards on the message boards". I think that would help here as I'm sick of hearing about all the politics and drama. Perhaps Longshadow could add that to his guidelines? Then, if someone had an issue, they could email him and the rest of us wouldn't have to have a week long debate on it.

(Just my opinion).

Excellent point. Let's get back to the original intent and try to use this area of the forum for technical ideas, requests, etc., rather than drama debates. If you have an "issue" email me instead.

Wow. I just want to say thanks for a great forum. Why does all this drama come into play. If you don't like a post ingnore it don't flame it. This is a great spot and I appreciate all the time, effort and money put into it just so I can have a better hiking, biking, skiing season.

May I add to the thanks voices? This board is one of the best moderated I've seen anywhere, and I can't believe the tiny things that put a few people up in arms. He's gone guys, if you don't like it, the door's that way.
Thanks LS
