I'm starting my summer practicum in Victoria and will only have my bike for transportation.

Are there any good hikes within biking distance from the hospital (royal jubilee)???

Any good rides in the area??

thanks

Hey Gamma,
Welcome to Vic, for hikes around Vic within biking distance, well it really depends on what you consider riding distance. If you want to ride, I mean really ride, head out on West Saanich rd to the Hartland dump. Very good riding very very good. As for trails, your closest options are gonna be taking the galoping goose out to Sooke, apporx 50 km with no traffic just a super smooth riding path, or if you want to head out to gold stream. Both will take a few hours to get too. The hike you have to try is the east sooke coastal trail, you'll need some transportation though. There are some pretty good riding trails at Mt Doug as well, its in Cordova bay, which is not far from the Jubilee. If you like to ride, one thing of interest might be taking the trans canada trail up island, it will take you right to the top, you catch it off the highway going up the Malahat. Maps of this are easy to get on the web, I have a link somewhere and will try and find, this is a really cool trip with some amazing views, namely the Kinsol trestle. You can bike till your hearts content on that trail and go as far as you want. Let me know if ya need anything else. Cheers.

Scott

Gowlland Tod Park has some nice hikes, as does Goldstream Park. Check provincal parks website for info. For regional (CRD) areas check out their website. Some easy hikes would be Mt. Work, Thetis Lk. has lots of trails, Mt. Wells is nice. East Sooke Park is great, but would be a long ride there. Sooke Hills have some more off the beaten track rides/hikes that can be accessed from the Galloping Goose Pathway.

Island Hikes 1 is a good book for info on hiking on south VI. Have fun.
