I have never been to Oregon, so when, on a whim, my husband and I decided to hit the road for the Oregon Coast, I had no idea what to expect. We packed up our car camping gear, grabbed my sister-in-law, and made arrangements to meet a friend at Cape Lookout State Park.

We knew the weather was questionable, so we booked a campsite for the first night, and a cabin for the second night. I wish it was the other way around, but we survived the nasty squalls that came ashore for most of Saturday night and Sunday morning.

After heading down the I5, and eating some gawd awful fast food at Taco Hell in Longview, we had a quick look around town. We found that the cars were the most interesting thing in town.

Then it was time for the next leg of the trip across the bridge and to the quaint little town of Astoria, OR. There we were pleasantly surprised by the barking of sea lions. We went to investigate, only to find thousands of tons of sea lions resting on the docks. Apparently, they come in to town for mating season. I was surprised to be able to get so close to them.

After ogling the sea lions, and a coffee, we pushed on for the last leg of the road trip. The closer we got to our destination, the more rain seemed to be pouring down!

Thankfully, after a grocery stop in Tallamook, we arrived at our campsite to find our friend had set up a shelter. We set up camp and enjoyed a meal of fresh caught salmon cooked over charcoal.

I didn't get any photos that night, as the rain was just too dangerous for my camera gear. However, a 7 am stroll on the beach gave me a few opportunities to get some snapshots with my digital camera.

As we had to move camp today, and the weather was pretty changable, we decided to take in some of the sights along the coast and then head into Tillamook for a visit to the cheese factory and the air museum. I reluctantly gave up my quest to hike to the end of Cape Lookout as the cold wet night had taken it's toll on me and my party.

The coast is incredible. Long sandy beaches, quaint little towns, and lots and lots of photo opportunities.

In Tillamook, we had the pleasure of lunch at the Blue Heron Cheese Factory. Though I think I was more interested in the petting zoo, and the old picturesque farm vehicles.

After that, we decided to take in the Tillamook Air Museum. If you ever get a chance to check it out, DO! The blimp hangar is really cool. It's HUGE! If you look closely, you can even see a blimp in there.

Then it was back to camp, where we packed up our wet stuff, and headed for the luxury of the cabin on the other side of the campground. Then, it cleared, and we were blessed with a beautiful sunset.

Then, it was over. We hit the road at about 9:30 a.m., had the world's shortest border crossing (we clocked it at 8 minutes), and were home for dinner.

I'll be going back to take in more of the beaches, and definitely a lot more of the hiking opportunities.
