I could use tips on how to crash softer
but I gotta tell ya the solar still idea will get you killed if you think it will work.They say last resort for good reason !!!

To help start fires: collect pitch drops off of trees when hiking. Pitch dust and blobs are easy to start and burn like crazy.
Pinecones make excellent kindling as well. High in pitch and surface area.
