Sorry to break it to you but it is a site that is available to anyone that types in the address and it is not a house. It is an internet message board. If he does not want it to be available to anyone he can always password it at the front page before getting on the boards. Not everyone likes to kiss ass and say "o.k. i'll listen and be good" Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and it's too bad that when some one goes against the grain, people like you jump in and try to intimidate others to conform. I had the same b.s. when I first started posting here but it didn't work very well.

So now what? There is the option of banning those who rub others the wrong way such as myself, or there is acceptance that every one has their own opinions and will post accordingly...that's life. I respect Longshadow for allowing differences of opinion. I think he has done a fine job with this site.

Some of the stuff people whine about is pretty stupid.

Well lets see a request was made for the thread to be ended, and it wasn't, so another request was made, and it still didn't happen. So the thread was locked.
To me that means it's over, no more responding, your privilage to do so is then gone.

Now can we focus on some hiking, the weekend is here (almost) so lets get out and do some hiking and then talk about that.

Oriana> who is arguing? I'm simply stating my point of view. Is this not permitted here?

This is indeed a hiking forum but even so, shouldn't one be allowed to respond and speak one's mind? And as a sidenote there are MANY topic headings on here - from photography to book suggestions etc. I believe that Longshadow intended the central topic to be hiking but was open to other topics as well - which is a very good way to be. I think it would be boring if we all had to stick to one thing.

There are thousands of members here - thousands of diverse opinions and ways of being. I think that as long as people are respectful of one another, we ought to be permitted to speak our minds.

Hodge> who is not being polite? Who is being rude in this house? I'm unsure who that comment is directed to or why.

Which would be the same as being banned. That statement coming from some one without the authority to ban users would be pretty much pointless.

Actually it's by Longshadow's good graces that we can all post here. You need an identity before you post. Identities are controlled by LS as is the existence of this site. I'm not saying he will boot people off, but I am saying we SHOULD show some respect for the purpose of this site. He puts alot of his own $$ and effort into it and does not ask for much in return.

Idealistic. Still no email from you?

Don't mind me I'm feeling feisty today and running out of patience.

I'd agree that Longshadow has done a fine job moderating this site and being open to varied opinions

In case you didn't notice, I was voicing 'my own opinion', which I am entitled to do according to you..... or does that not apply to everyone....

I made a general statement of my opinion and did not attempt to direct it at anyone. I most certainly did not intimidate anyone.

Absolutely. I know that... but to compare an internet site with some ones house though is more than a bit off.

I have not really seen any disrespect or abuse of this site. All in all people do show respect...but differences of opinion do and will occur.

It was a pretty simple analogy actually, refering to the right of the host to ban someone from the board or ask them to leave, using myself as the example. Sorry if that was confusing

As I said...which would be pretty much pointless IMO. No confusion there.

Anyhow...I grow tired of this thread and I have nothing valuable to add. *turns and runs for the door*

Some good points made, but overall this is a thread that isn't really going anywhere.

I do encourage opinions, points of view, and discussion topics. However, I must insist that they be placed in the appropriate spot on the site. For example, this thread is presently in the "seeking hiking partners" which is soon to be moved once I am done. So first off, let's try to keep these things in the right spot.

Yes, it isn't a house, but a discussion forum. But I tell you, if this stuff is left untreated, the site will turn to shit in no time. Some would argue that it already has. You can just look at some of the other boards on the net that have been left to their own devices which have self destructed. It might be fun to read for a bit, but it does get old fast as well. I have stated in numerous threads before to cut out the BS. I created the site for hiking, not soap operas.

Another point I'd like to bring up is the fact that this is a spawn of a thread that was locked by Jimbo. I have given Jimbo moderator ability so he can use his best judgement to look after the forums when I am not around. From what I can tell, he hinted several times about dropping the thread before he went and locked it. At some point, someone will be cut off - it wasn't anyone in particular, but it was something that just continued. The way this thread has carried on after the locking illustrates why it was locked in the first place.

Here's another thing to think about. Alot of people who are seriously here to talk about hiking get put off by BS. We all lose when that happens. We lose their opinions, we lose their trip reports, we lose their advice on gear and trails, and so on. It just becomes a place to look at useless drivel. I may as well be watching daytime TV.

And rather than continue this thread and have each and every person here try to explain what they meant only to have another 5 people question them, let's just drop it now and quit contributing to wasting bandwidth. I'm sure there will be people who disagree with me, but I can't please everyone.

I have to get back to work now. If more crap is posted to this thread, I'll lock it and take the blame this time.

And GO OUTSIDE AND HIKE!

Looks like some civil discussion starting. Please take it to another thread though to prevent further discussion on prior.
