"It's going to be too wet to climb" she said, "let's just go for a hike."
Planning for torrential rains, we were surprised by the weather. It was a not bad day, for hiking anyways.
Day began with a little blizzard on Highway 3. Should we turn around? No, lets go get wet...
 Snow in the cedar grove
Sumallo Bluffs, veiled in mist and snow, but not ice.
However, as we hiked down the trail, the snow melted away, and the sun even came out briefly...
 Green forest, green water
Pure BC snowmelt. I was looking for harlequin ducks, but didn't see any....
 Just these duck-billed shelf fungi.
The trail is in good shape. Saw some rhodos but none are blooming yet, of course. Well maintained trail, better than the last time I hiked it, the trail has been rebuilt across the rockslide near Marmotte Creek, and there was only one little blowdown on the whole trail.
We hiked south for about 12km to the spot across from Silvertipped Creek with the good view of the east face of Silvertip, then turned around and came back.
One section of trail follows a natural ledge across a mossy cliff.
Hatchethead Mountain and The Moles from the first bridge near the end of the day.
"Wow, what was in those cookies?!?!"
Pretty good way to spend a couple hours. Saw some footprints in the snow in the AM, otherwise no one all day. 24 km or so round trip, only 100m or so elevation change.
By the time we got back to Highway 3 the snow had risen a couple hundred meters up the hillside - warm front must have come in. |

Great TR...This is another one of those I'd "like to do", only I'd do the whole thing to Ross Lake and arrange a pickup!

| Thanks for the TR & pics, Dru. I love that area and have to check it out again soon. It's a good place for a shoulder season overnighter. |

There had been mention of grizzlies in that area - any evidence? It's one of the reasons I am scared to go on that trail. I am probably just a chicken, though.....

| Saw some cat scat and probably coyote, but no bear sign. I have seen black bears on that trail when the berries are out. If I was you I wouldn't worry about bears on the trail - you are just as likely to meet them in your back yard, especially if you have a fruit tree or a compost pile. |

| There are grizzlies in the park, more chance of meeting them in the alpine though... |

When there's fish in the river and snow in the alpine you are pretty unlikely to find bears in the alpine...
Anyway the griz don't know where the park boundary goes.. one was even seen from a helicopteron Goat Bluffs on Ogilvie a few years ago. |

What beautiful country. Nice pictures. Sumallo Bluffs looks like the inside of a snow globe. Can't believe how clear the water is running up there! Thanks!

Great place for an easy overnighter. I have taken my daughter there a few times now, in various conditions.
Will be back - again |

oh i'll admit it - that photo was a fluke. i was shooting with flash-off mode, most of the shots were over exposed, and i just happened to blur that one in a spiral. still trying to figure out how i did it? my attempts to replicate it are only partially successful, i can get the blur, but not swirly like that.
unless i enhance it in? |
