3 of us headed up Heart Mountain today. The trail is relatively snow free to the first summit, but there is ice in some spots. It wasn't too busy, likely b/c of a biting wind that left us all with wind-burnt cheeks and lips. A few of the others on the trail continued along the ridge trying to reach the true summit. We were too tired from a 20 km hike up Moose Mountain on Saturday to try the ridge ourselves. There was more snow on the ridge, but it didn't look too bad. Having been up Heart a few times we did not take pictures.

was the ice dangerious? like a bit of ice here and there, or is the ice located in places that would raise the diffifulty grade?

I wouldn't say it raised the level of difficulty too much, more so just required some more prudance and patience. Those with hiking poles faired much better, but of course poles are a nuisance when hands are required.

Hi K,

I did Heart Mtn on July 1st of 2003, biting wind then too! I really enjoyed the loop.

Yup, I've been hiking out here for years and had never done Heart Mountain before Sunday. I will be adding this one to my "fitness" hikes, like Prairie Mountain. I would think one should be able to get up and down Heart in an evening, well, at least starting late afternoon.

I Love Prairie Mountain too!! It's a quick morning jaunt and you can be in Bragg Creek for Lunch.

Have you heard of the Moose Mountain summer solstace(sp?) hike? I did it one year on June 21st and a hoard of people were up there, what a blast! Hike to the top, watch the sun set with a glass of wine, hike down in the dark.

I've done Heart twice, both in summer. Middle of the week is a good time to go to beat any crowds. Went down the west side the first time. The dry rocky creek bed was a pain. I don't plan to ever repeat my descent that way. I highly recommend the circuit route. Makes a really good conditioning hike.

You've done Moose Mtn already?! What was the walk in like, all snowshoeing?

Anyone ever dropped down a bit too soon coming off the Heart mountain loop, into that small valley, and got "stuck" above a small waterfall? Took a while, but after our group did we finally noticed the chain. I was a bit skeptical using that chain, I mean, how long have those bolts been weathering there anyway? :)

Haven't done Moose yet, too cold, I'm embarassed to say I'm a fair weather hiker for sure!!! May is early enough for me.

I haven't had occasion to be stuck in the valley.....but there is always next year!!
