Sumas Mountain Centennial Trail

This is another section of the Centennial Trail. Most of it is in Sumas Mountain Park. Unfortunately the eastern trailhead was on private property, and ran through what is now a large rock quarry.

Directions

To get to the eastern trailhead, exit off the freeway onto No.3 road and go north toward the mountain instead of going south toward Vedder and Cultus Lake, then turn right and follow North Parallel Road, going east. After a few km you come to a small bridge. Turn left immediately after it to cross over the pump station dam on Quadling Road. After you cross over the Dam the road goes right and left. There is a small parking area to the left, and the trailhead used to be across the road from it, where the western edge of the quarry is now.

Details

The trail, now largely abandoned but still visible in spots, goes east and follows the Vedder River north east and then turns and follows the Fraser River westerly. It approaches Chadsey Lake from the North side. From Chadsey there is a loop trail to the Summit Lookout. You can go left or right at the lake. The right trail has less grade and recommended when going up. It comes to a road where the old parking area is. Go left up the road for 1 kilometer to the trail to the Summit. Good views of the Eastern part of the Fraser Valley.

If you go left at the lake the trail is much steeper. It has some good views of the lake and Western part of the Valley.

Both directions join just before the Summit so it can be hiked as a loop back to the lake.

See Chadsey Lake Loop for more trails in the area.

UPDATE: The Eastern trailhead is currently marked with "trail closed" signs and a rock quarry has destroyed part of the trail, necessitating a steep bushwack to bypass it.
