Directions
From the Armdale Rotary in Halifax take highway 3 ~6.5km to the Lakeside Industrial Park. Turn right onto Lakeside Drive, then drive about 300m to the parking lot next to the Coca-cola building. This is the main trailhead, but the trail runs near highway 3 for most of its length and crosses it several times so the trail can be picked up in several other places.
Details
The trail is built on an old railway bed and runs for nearly 10km near highway 3. The trail crosses the road several times - watch for traffic. The trail is shared use with cyclists and ATV users also having access to the trail. Its flat and straight nature make it perhaps more suited to cycling than to hiking. The trail is mostly in and out of residential areas, but there is a short wooded section near the end after the trail goes under highway 103 at Cranberry lake. The lake is suitable for swimming on a hot day, but the water is very cold.
The trail ends in Timberlea near exit 4 on highway 103. However, the railbed has been converted into a trail beyond there and is managed by the St. Margaret's Bay trail association. It is possible to continue on the railbed, now a trail, using the St. Margaret's Bay trail, then the Aspotagan Rail Trail to go all the way to Hubbards.
