Directions
From highway 101 take exit 11 north to the junction with highway 1 and highway 358. Follow highway 358 to Canning. In Canning take the Pereau Road and watch for signs to Blomidon Provincial Park. Park in the lot at the bottom of the hill outside the park gate. For a much shorter hike, continue on the road into the park and join the trail at the picnic area. This hike is best done in the off-season when the campground is closed.
Details
The route described here makes a figure-8 shaped loop using most of the park trails.
From the lower parking lot follow the road uphill for a few meters to find the entrance to the Borden Brook trail on the left. Once you have entered the woods there is a junction - go left and ascend the slope. At the top the trail becomes an old woods road. Turn right and follow the bridge over Borden Brook. Continue along the road watching for a junction on the right with red trailmarkers. Follow this trail to a large field.
Cross the field directly and continue on to the road through the park. Cross the road into the picnic area. At the far end of the picnic area pick up the Joudrey Trail along the top of the cliff. There is a fence on the edge of the cliff in some places. For awhile you will be able to see campsites through the trees on your left, but soon you will be in the woods.
The trail continues along the top of the cliff, then descends into a ravine where there is a commemorative plaque. Continue straight along the Lookoff Trail to the viewpoint with a wooden raised viewing platform.
To return, retrace your steps from the viewpoint to a nearby junction and go right onto the Woodland trail which is just inside the park boundary. There are some clearcut areas to your right just outside the park. After a few kms on this trail it gets wider and is gravel topped as it nears the campground. Ignore the many junctions to the interpretative trails and campground sidetrails and continue straight on the main trail.
Once you come out onto the main park road, cross it and enter the picnic area. Walk through the picnic area to the south end to pick up a trail marked by a wooden arch. Follow this trail steeply downhill past viewpoints of the Minas Basin. The trail ends in a grassy field over top of a steep cliff. The parking lot and the road are close by up a staircase and across a brook.
