Details

First a caveat: THIS IS A ROUGH, BACKCOUNTRY ROUTE THAT MUST BE TREATED WITH SERIOUS CAUTION: The upper reaches are not free of snow until July and routefinding is difficult in inclement weather. Be fit, fully equipped, and choose a good weather window for this hike. Lynn Creek can be hazardous to cross in high water conditions, and the boulder field can be dangerous when the snow is melting out in spring and summer.....

Route starts at park entrance area. Follow the Cedar Mills Trail to the Debris Chute, where you will join the Headwaters Trail heading toward Norvan Falls. From Norvan Falls area cross the new bridge over Norvan Creek and head north until you reach a signed junction for Hanes Valley

From the signed junction turn left and downhill to cross Lynn Creek, then follow the tapes into the valley beyond. Eventually you'll reach Hanes Valley, where you'll follow cairns and the occasional tape up it's vast boulder field. Remember to head due west and not north toward Crown Mountain and ridge. You will work your way to Crown Pass between the cliffs of Crown on your right, and the cliffs of Goat Mountain on your left. Once here, you will follow markers left and uphill to the trail which will bring you to the Grouse Mountain chalet.

You'll have to plan transportation from the bottom of Grouse back to Lynn Headwaters, or, for a really long day, hike the Baden Powell Trail to return to your starting point.

This is Hike #52 in the current edition of 103 Hikes, some recommended reading for the trip

Route is marked but not patrolled regularly; unsuitable for children.
