Directions

Hikers can take the bus to Horseshoe Bay and walk up the Seaview Walk to the bridge that crosses Nelson Creek on the Trans Canada Way. Drivers can park at the Seaview Walk parking (Eagleridge Drive and Marine Drive) or they can park at the Nelson Canyon parking (off Westport Road below the Upper Levels Highway) and follow the access road over to the bridge. The trailhead is on the west side of the bridge on the north side of the road.

Details

Starting at the bridge, a fairly well maintained trail switchbacks up the hillside through a large grove of Arbutus trees. Less than 300 meters along the trail, a junction is reached. Continuing straight and to the left leads to a lookout, while the trail to the right and uphill leads to a set of powerlines and a helipad.

To reach the viewpoint, take the leftbranch and follow the trail over a small mossy rock bluff. Past this point the trail becomes rough, but it can be easily followed another 150 meters to a fantastic viewpoint on the rock bluff overlooking the Strait of Georgia.

To reach the helipad, take the right branch and follow it uphill. At the power lines, the trail comes up one one side of a helipad. On the other side of the helipad another trail goes onto the other side of the ridge in a loop that takes about an hour to do. If you take the left branch of the loop, bear right; right branch, bear left, and it takes you back to the loop intersection. There's one wet patch where you walk on a log - everywhere else the trail is well-drained. Trees down in many places, but no large detours. Two side trails off this loop lead to the Whyte Lake Trail - one (at the intersection with the rocks) to the shelter on the WLT near the Baden Powell Trail, the other (the intersection with the flagging - the trail without flagging) to the WLT just above the bridge across Whyte Creek. (This side trail becomes scattered near the bottom - all other trails easy to follow). About a half hour up or down the hill to the helipad. About an hour loop behind the ridge.

Warning, lots of ticks in warmer weather.
