Directions
Starting in Port Moody on Barnet Highway (#7A), turn north onto Ioco Road. After heading straight through two intersections, the road changes into Heritage Mountain Boulevard and climbs uphill. Continue for two kilometers to a roundabout, turning right Davis Avenue. A short distance later, turn left onto Forest Park Way at a four way stop then left again onto Aspenwood Drive almost immediately. Aspenwood Drive becomes East Road and leads through the village of Anmore to Sunnyside Road. Turn right, and continue to the park entrance gate. Park in the main parking lot.
During the summer months, Buntzen Lake is extremely popular - the parking lot is on a first-come basis only. Once the parking lots are full, the gate will be closed for the day. Gate opening and closing times change throughout the year, approximately dawn and dusk. To find out the current times, call the Buntzen Lake Warden's office at 604-469-9679.
The C26 bus operates from Coquitlam Centre to the Buntzen Lake area daily. Normally the bus stops at the either the East Road / Sunnyside Road intersection or the turnaround before the gate, but on weekends and holidays in July and August continues to the Buntzen Lake parking area. For bus schedules and information, visit the Translink website. It's 15-20 minute walk (1.8 km) from the gate to the parking area.
Details
From the parking lot head back up the access road to a turn where another gated road (gravel) heads off. Just past the gate is a trail board with a map. The trail starts here. Follow it along to a small bridge, after that go left and up staying left a few minutes later. You will emerge under some powerlines. Follow the path upwards another couple of minutes until you see a trail (sign posted) heading off into the forest on the right.
Follow this trail (well marked) as it ascends up to Polytrichum lookout (about an hour). Fifteen minutes beyond that the trail reaches the plateau and enters some new growth. When there is no snow around the trail is easy to follow here, but with snow route finding can be difficult.
Eventually the trail gets back into old growth and reaches a junction called El Paso. Just before that there are 2 junctions that are not marked on the map. The first junction is a trail (recent) that goes off to the right towards the White Rock view point. The second juction is a trail (right) that leads to White Rock view point and Coffee Break view point. At El Paso you can take either the view point route or lake district route to get to Lindsay Lake. The view point is longer but has some nice western views. The lake district route winds its way around a bunch of small lakes (note that there are east and west loops on this trail, so watch signage and don't get inadvertantly turned around).
At Lindsay Lake you can make it a loop trip back to El Paso by taking the other trail (follow the Main Trail signs). You can also continue onwards towards Mt. Beautiful (Eagle Peak, 1270m elevation) which is at least an hour further on. If so, to return you can continue just past Eagle Peak and descend the Swan Falls (steep) trail back down to the north end of Buntzen Lake and then back to the parking lot (give yourself eight hours to do all this).
Dilly Dally Loop instructions: For Dilly Dally and Swan Falls the usual direction is clockwise, as both ways up, especially Swan Falls are steep and slippery in sections, and much more pleasant to climb than to descend. Directions reflect this.
Walk the Buntzen Lake trail on the east side to North Beach. Now follow Powerhouse road passing the Swan Falls trailhead. After passing the dam take the right fork, the road will turn from gravel briefly to asphalt then back to gravel. Shortly you come on a parking area with a few dead vehicles. Continue on the road. After that look for a gravel track heading off to the right, it will have a blue sign with Dilly Dally Trail on it.
Follow the track and signage which will lead you up the mountain side on trail and very old logging skid roads. A side trip to Crocker Lookout is not worth the while as the views are minimal due to trees.
On the approach to the ridge there is a critical junction that has been missed resulting in a cold night and a (thankfully) successful search effort by SAR teams. After the initial climb mostly on an old skid road the trail leaves the old road for good to the left, ascending steeply with a creek to the right, then crossing the creek. Take note of the time. About 15 minutes later at a brisk pace (the climb to the creek crossing from leaving the road way back at the bottom takes 1:15 at this pace, adjust the 15 minute estimate as needed) watch for a fallen log the trail goes the length of, walking on the log. A few seconds after this is the junction. Take the right steep uphill marked branch. The left lower fork is unmarked but distinct, traversing down slightly. This is the exit from the Indian Arm Trail, a multi-day minimally marked bushwack route originating at Mount Seymour.
After taking the right fork continue up to the ridge and follow the ridgeline southwards, ascending a little more to Dilly Dally Peak and some great views.
The trail is straightforward from here, staying on or close to the ridge line to the junction with the Swan Falls Trail to Powerhouse Road on the right. See the route info below following the Swan Falls description.
--- Swan Falls / Eagle Peak description (to integrate)
From the parking lot follow the lake trail northwards along the eastern shoreline for 4km. The trail then follows Powerhouse Rd. for about half a km. Look for a trailhead marker on your right. Follow the trail past an old cabin and under the powerlines and then into the woods. This is the start of the Swan Falls trail. It rises very steeply for a quite while until it crosses a creek and the grade eases. At a small meadow the trail then heads east up to the pass where it meets the Dilly Dally trail. A left here (north) will take you to Dilly Dally Peak. Right is the way to Eagle Peak, Lindsey Lake and home. Follow the trail over some rock with views opening up to the summit.
From there the trail continues south mostly in the trees with a few ups and downs until you get to Lindsay Lake. This is another junction. Going right follows the trail around the west side of Eagle Mtn. (different from Eagle Pk.) and some nice view points. Going left at Lindsay Lake has the trail passing a bunch of small lakes along with some other small loops (watch the signage so you don't reverse yourself). The lake trail is shorter than the viewpoint trail, and can be muddy. See Lindsey Lake Loop for more info on that area.
Both trails end up at El Paso junction. From here keep heading southwards. Within five minutes you will leave the old forest and enter a newer growth area. After crossing a creek you hit mature forest again briefly (a couple of nice sized red cedars) before starting back down in 2nd growth to the parking lot. Early in the descent you skirt a steep gully where some caution is warranted if it is slippery. One more viewpoint (Polytrichum) to pass on route.
