Title: Slow Slow Slow!

Strengths: lightweight/compact, rugged, long lasting ceramic element, great tasting water
Weaknesses: Slow, high pumping effort, very frequent element cleaning needed
Conclusions: I bought this filter in 1994($160!) as I was looking for a compact/lightweight unit. It is that BUT the flow rate is SLOW and you need to be built like Arnold Schwarzenegger to pump more than 1 Litre of water!

While tolerable for solo use where you only need to filter 1 - 2L a day, it falls completely flat on it's face in a group situation(2 or more people)It took 2 people spelling each other off, labouring more than 2 hours 45 minutes to filter 12L of water for 3 hikers!

Filtering with this unit is a real workout and is something I dreaded.

The water it produces is very good, taste wise. I find it easier to clean the filter's ceramic element with an old toothbrush, rather than the very abrasive/coarse cleaning brush supplied, which would leave gouges in the ceramic material. The element requires very frequent cleaning in silty water conditions.(Garibaldi Lake for example)and needed to be cleaned 2-3x per litre!

I attached a short length (16") of surgical hose to the output 'nozzle' so I could place the other end of the hose into a water bottle and not spill any of the hard fought for water that it produced.

Actual weight on my scales for the unit and storage/carrying bag is 255g.

Did I mention this thing is slow?? hard to pump?? and needs cleaning all too often in silty conditions???
