Description

Although relatively minimalist, this bag does have bug netting, a wire hoop to keep the bag off your face and a short side opening. It worked very well for me in relatively benign conditions. I stayed warm and dry in spite of temperatures below the normal comfort range of my sleeping bag and waking up to find the bag frost coated. The bag is quite large so there was plenty of room to bring some extra gear inside (eg: some clothes for changing in the bag, headlamp, glasses, book etc).

Features

The South Col is a year-round, all-purpose bivy, constructed to provide light and tough shelter for one. To facilitate easy breathing, the face opening has a layer of no-see-um mesh. Sleep under the stars, even when the bugs are out. A wire brim-stiffener keeps the fabric off your face. Face opening and mesh have zippered closures.

* Fits one person only. Fits to 201cm (6ft.7in.).

* Floor is made of 200-denier taffeta nylon, polyurethane-coated for waterproofness to 3500mm.

* Upper is made of durable, waterproof, and highly breathable three-layer Tegraltex® nylon face fabric, PTFE laminate, and a Nexus® polyester inner face.

* Watertight tape-sealed seams wherever possible.

* Zippered (22in) side opening has a Velcro® weather flap for extra venting and lets you stay roped up if required.

* Packed size is 12 x 34cm.

Strengths: Compact and light
Weaknesses: Minimal features
Conclusions: Roomy bivy with all of the features I consider essential but very little more (keeping the weight to a minimum). Well constructed with excellent materials. An eVent version is also available which is even lighter, packs smaller and breathes better...but at at a higher price.

Weaknesses: breathability
Conclusions: Great bag, keeps the elements out and has all the features one would want plus lots of space. Only comment is that in the snow i get condensation on the lower sides because the non breathable material comes little higher than i would like. Other than that a great bag and i would definently buy it again.
