Title: Who needs a filter?
Score:

Strengths: Small and light
Weaknesses: Length of time requireed to treat water
Conclusions: Aside from using a filter for large groups and severely contaminated water, I have relied on soley Pristine to treat my water. I have yet to get sick. If ClO2 is good enough to be used by many municipal water treatment plants, it's good enough for me. It takes time for the drops to kill any waterborn critters so you have to learn to be patient.

Title: No filtering here, either...

Strengths: Light, effective, inexpensive
Weaknesses: "Stuff" still in the water
Conclusions: If you can live with sediment and some glacial silt in your water, Pristine is a highly effective treatment that is simple to use and easy to fit in your pack.

It does take some time, but I find that I set up the chemical reaction, spend five minutes filling my bladder/whatever and then spend the next fifteen to thirty minutes hiking while my water "treats."

Presto!

Title: Mmmmmmmmmmm water
Score:
Written by: boo Created Time:3/27/2007 10:52:11 AM
Strengths: light, cheap, doesn't break
Weaknesses: if you can't see yellow or smell then there's trouble
Conclusions: I haven't gotten sick using these drops yet (although I can't say definitively that it's because of the drops).

The drops don't leave a taste or colour change.

As for sediment worries... that's why I take coffee filter paper with me!

Title: Drops over Filter
Score:
Written by: skate Created Time:3/28/2007 12:01:05 PM
Strengths: Light, Won't Break, Effective
Weaknesses: Time
Conclusions: An alternative to bulkier filters, these drops are effective at treating water. Yes, time is an issue, but hey nothing's perfect.

Title: I no longer carry a water filter
Score:
Written by: Gulagger Created Time:7/31/2007 10:02:43 AM
Strengths: light, compact, easy to use
Weaknesses: time they take to work, don't remove particulate (obviously)
Conclusions: I'll echo the other reviews here and say that these drops are great, except that you have to wait for the treatment to take effect. I haven't noticed any different taste to my water.

The small size of the bottles means I can easily take them on day hikes for emergencies, or fill up on the trail with minimal fuss. To avoid the wait time for the reaction to work, I usually mix up some drops before I go to bed on overnighters and allow them to work overnight so I have water for the next day. Or I'll do them right when I get into camp so they can work while I have my afternoon nap. I find they are much less hassle then crouching on some muddy bank trying to pump litres of water and avoid the bugs.

Title: Base camp
Score:
Written by: Johnny B Created Time:11/12/2007 12:58:03 PM
Strengths: Lightweight, non-bulky
Weaknesses: Needs care when mixing, more mix for glacier creek water
Conclusions: I carry with me, a 10 L empty dromedary bag for base camps. Whether it be for hiking or sea kayaking, they work great if you're sticking around for a day or more in one area. Instead of continuously filtering 1 L jug's, or boiling water, a measured cap full of Pristine, is a lot less work than trying to pump 10 liters of water. You always need to hydrate, if you have to work for it, you tend to drink less. It's surprising how popular you become, when others just need one cup lol.

particulate wise, a coffee filter(as previously mentioned), a bandanna or such cup'd in the opening(you're treating it anyway).
